You slept through the rain
Sun’s out for you again
Like you trained God
To cry for your parade
But the party always ends
Left with the greenest beds
Just careful where you tread
Cos the soil is soft
And it’ll swallow to your head
It’s not like I sat at the window
Praying to stop the wind blow
But I felt the trickles tickle
Not that you’d know
Because you were warm and safe
Whilst I was off my face
I turned red in my disgrace
With nothing to scrub the paint
I’ve been caught rose handed
And the garden’s all misplaced
So you’ll guess soon enough
That the windows weren’t slipped up
It was me that ran through the grass
Stomping bare toes through home grown love
I beg you for your shelter
To heat me soft and quick
As you dry my soaking feet
With plenty thorns for you to pick
Now I’m pocked and ugly
You’re shocked and knocked and grubby
Still you can’t resist
To pluck and kiss and hug me
Before I can explain my wandering
The rain puts you to sleep once more
And before I can catch dreams with you
I’ve slipped through the open door
I feel God’s tears slip over my shoulders
His droplets drench my back
I swim my nails through dripping hair
And it puddles in my lap
You find me in the morning
Dry now the sun’s come to shine
You ask how I ended up out here
But I don’t have a what? a when? or why?
It’s like I lose you come nighttime
You disappear in the distance
Into a place not mine
Granted to a space not for me
I close my eyes and try to imagine
But you can’t compare fantasies
Then I think I’m searching earth for connection
As I soak every limb and inch of skin
Where I stop drowning in the wish of you
So I can finally learn how to swim.
