The 123 Me

You were the only one

Who never said I was a nightmare

Only one who never got pissed off

At peeling me from the pavement

Only one who left my bedsheets

Permanently fragrant

Only one I never felt like I was boring

When I was drawing

My imagination with words

Only one who got me

For you shared the same curse

And only one I had to walk away from

Cos you’d been spoilt worst

The red ring around the fag is fading

Like it’s encouraging me

But I know better than to cave

This blower makes it so easy

To just reach you

But I know better moves to make

Same feeling though

Same gut-ringing crave

And I could relapse, it would be so exciting

But age has made me far less brave

I’m still the one who gets you better

Even though it’s been too much of a while

Only one who can call you vile

With utter credence

Because I saw it in its infancy

Still I’m charmed by your grubbiness, instantly

Because you bring those indie songs to life

With a spike of true crime documentary

Even a dig’s complementary

But I’m the one behind the scenes

The one who keeps it all together

I’m the one who made dependency

Not mean forever

I’m the one you think of

When that comedown kicks too savage

I’m the one you imagine is living lavish

Another squat, another warehouse

Another mug to bleed completely dry

Another spliff, another sniff

Another lonely cry

I’m the one that felt sorry for you, still

Even after all you did

I’m the one that prayed each time you died

A piece of you would live

I’m the one still writing poems about you

Still singing songs that only fraction capture

I’m the one still getting sober

From your all consuming rapture

So I fancied a smoke just then

Provoked alone by the trigger

And I fancied a thought of you just then

Cos I saw someone with your figure

Between little me and the urge

I dunno who’s bigger

The wind blew hard, as I hit my yard

And I slipped in avoiding shiver

What street is it you’re roaming?

What lap you twiddling hair on?

How many times you smash shuffle

Before you find your song?

Wonder if you’re still writing

Wonder if your spirit powers on

Wonder if you’re the one to someone new

Or if that ability in you

Is gone.
