Drowning, that’s what to call it
Because, like the engulfing waves
Miles out, sky surrounding
You have no control when it rushes
And at shore, with the tiny rolls
Flushing scum and garbage
To security that crumbles at a tap
You’ve also lost sway over that
You float without thought
Let it take you without focus
Or course
Then you’re drowning
Without notice
Sometimes the strength to swim
Saves you
Sometimes it exhausts your trying struggle
The panic parades your smattering body
As that vast gulf squeezes down to puddle
Fingers reach in, grab a wrist starved thin
And pulls you in to cuddle
But you didn’t want saving
Not because you don’t want saving
But because the idea of getting over this
Disgusts you
And when you brink that ponder
Consider enough to move onto a new concept
The fresh waves rush you
Drowning, that’s what it’s called
And that’s what I’m doing
Held up by the strength of a shoe string
So tempting is the tug
That’ll fray until fractured
I think I’m ready to let that vast space
Consider me captured
Because once they lose sight
They lose hope
They forgo the chance to fix me
I’ll take any opportunity
To shirk this responsibility
So I bid you kind thanks for the attempts
To save me from drowning
But I think I’m better lost at sea…
