You’re Not The Only One

I’m exhilarated by the slow tide, the acoustic strum

The sofa sit and sink and numb bum

Blood rushes at the brushes of ink into letter

And fucking hell, a deep conversation

Nothing’s better

Let’s discuss the abstract

Let’s philosophise how the trees breathe

How when no one’s died

We still feel grief

How when you hold a blade of grass

Between your teeth

It whistles like some women sing

Why the bitter memory of an old friend’s kiss

Can actually taste disgusting

You came to my couch

Poured something out

Before you could leash your tongue

To its typical etiquette

It’s not always about betterment

Some things are vile

And vile is needed for gorgeous to succeed

Nervous to proceed

Do you follow orders or take lead?

Do you do one and wish you did the other?

Firm it for heaven at the finish line

Or wallow in whatever it is you suffer?

It can just be cups of tea

And packs of biscuits

One day mortgage free

Always living within life’s limits

Big wedding day

And all the babies christened

Applauded because you coloured within the lines

Took the advice, didn’t just listen

But some of us are born to break those rules

In any little ways that suit us

Knocked back too many times

And heal by picking at its brute crust

Waiting to dig into the truth

Dig into the meaning

Some measure happiness as what they’ve done

To others it’s just a feeling

When we’re all following our own rebellion

We fail at organic connection

And forcing your morality

Will achieve nothing more than rejection

Sometimes the easy way is easy for a reason

Getting guidance from a textbook

The news feeding which way you’re leaning

Clocking in and clocking out

Cooking the same meal with the same seasoning

Shit the same hour, shave and shower

Wear whatever clobber’s fit for donkeys

You say you’ll never be happy

But what if you’re unlocking life

With the wrong key?

Proud of your aversion

Proud of your idiosyncratic path

Figured out how to keep the wallet fat

And the relationships to last

Own your own house, own your own business

Walk the dog at the weekend

And when you get a spare minute

Pop down and see your friends

So what exactly is different

To what everyone else has done?

I know you prioritise progress over fun

Admirable your determination

The world lacks what you exude

But without love and joy

All these things are so easy to lose

I can see it on your horizon

See you teeter at the open door

You know something is missing here

You just can’t figure out what you need more

Maybe you’re prowess for individuality

Can fix this in a way never done before

Because when you take that moment to pause

And stare up at the branches

It’s like what you keep at bay

Suddenly avalanches

It sprays all up the walls

And it spills into the carpets

Until you’re completely drenched

Feeling every hair on your body dancing

The phone will ring and you’ll snap out of it

Back to the grind, the sweat

But that tree will keep on growing

Sowing seeds and blowing breath.
