Weekend God

There’s an element of the excitement I miss

Not knowing when the buss’ll come

Or who’ll walk by the bushes as I squat to piss

When I’ll fall back through the front door

Or sleep off all this

Picking grit from my fingernails

As I set sail on cheap spirits

To find my way to Heaven again

But Heaven don’t come when you call her

She’s ill trained and vindictive

Wants me kissing dirt

And’s been telling everyone my secrets

I see all these kinds and creeds

Wandering the streets

Looking for her now she’s done with me

They want their little slice of Heaven

They can’t predict the night

So they circle sharpened nails

Through her thick tails

Until those serrated teeth do bite

The statistics will be posted

Per capita factored in

And covered faces clear as light

Heaven will laugh, at her aftermath

That hungry belly stuffed

Because enough will always roll the dice

On that trek to Heaven

You’ll see friend and foe alike

Feel yourself smarting out the universe

As you scatter curbs like mice

Don’t let her push you to wrong

Because it’s what’s been feeling right

Damaged, insecure, money to owe

You know you’re just her type

You’ll dance to every song they play

Stroke naked arms

And loop until wrists cross at waist

But every body just insatiates

You carry on like this, until sunrises’ fizz

Roll on home to rot the sheets

A dry tickle in your throat

An ice pick headache when you twist

And aching toes that still tap the beats

But you feel dirty, you know what you did

Was cheap

And when Heaven finds you

She’s make sure what you sow

Is what you reap

The memories will be captured

Replayed at every anniversary

But you stopped searching for Heaven

A while ago

Don’t recognise your own stories

Yet she will immortalise you

Hold you legend for your evil

She’ll get your songs to number one

Your fashions to the people

They’ll ride your point

Like a belly on a zombie knife’s tip

As if an angel spinning a church’s steeple

Slaughter each other for it

Until it starts to feel biblical

And Heaven will be there waiting

Face sweet as heated treacle

They’ll hang your pictures at the fireplace

Swinging throat

And settling cleavage

Sing your name in worship

Suck your spirit

As they toke like leeches

I know all of this, because I have been her martyr

I remember how the weekend preaches

And detours salvation until after

But you can never reclaim before

Can’t replicate or forget

Maybe hellish to muscle the righteous trek

Bypass the illustrious temptations

That pepper the path that Heaven sets

You’ll be a stronger God for it

Left unwanting for celestial adoption

So when they invite you out this weekend

Remember “no” is a worthy option…
